ACT Policing is a business unit of the AFP and was created for the purpose of providing policing services to the ACT under the auspices of a Policing Arrangement between the Commonwealth and ACT Governments.
The current Purchase Agreement was signed in August 2009 and is due to end on 30 June 2010. The signing of the agreement represents the highly successful policing partnership between the ACT Government and the AFP.

The service delivery under the Purchase Agreement has been articulated in terms of one major outcome and a series of outputs and performance measures.
The major outcome of the Purchase Agreement for police services requires that “ACT Policing work in partnership with the community to create a safer and more secure Australian Capital Territory through the provision of quality police services.”
During 2009-2010 this will be achieved through delivery of four key output areas:
- Crime and Safety Management – providing a safer and more secure ACT so that members of the community can go about their daily lives without undue fear of crime;
- Traffic Law Enforcement and Road Safety – enforcing traffic laws and promoting safer behaviour on ACT roads with the objective of reducing the number of crash fatalities and injuries to members of the community;
- Prosecution and Judicial Support – maximising the number of successful prosecutions in Court by providing support to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the courts; and
- Crime Prevention – reducing and preventing crime through strategies that incorporate government and community cooperation to address risk factors associated with criminal behaviour and recidivism and raise awareness of the community’s role in their own safety and security.
